InstaPV’s Watchlist is a paid, member-only feature that monitors any public Instagram account on your behalf and emails you a digest whenever the people they follow — or who follows them — changes. No daily manual refreshing, no scripting, no scraping. You pick a profile, pick a cadence (daily or weekly), and InstaPV does the diffing for you. Open https://www.instapv.ai/ to try it.

What is the Instagram Watchlist?

A Watchlist entry is a saved “monitor this profile” instruction. Once you add a public Instagram account to your Watchlist, InstaPV runs a periodic check in the background — every day or every week, your choice — and compares the latest snapshot of that account’s following + follower lists against the previous one. If anything changed, you get a single, clean email with four categorized lists:

  • New following — accounts this profile started following since the last check
  • Unfollowed — accounts this profile stopped following
  • New followers — accounts that started following this profile
  • Lost followers — accounts that unfollowed this profile

The email lands in your inbox, links straight back to the activity dashboard on InstaPV, and includes an unsubscribe link in the footer. No app to install, no push notification permissions to grant. Email is the entire delivery channel — because that’s what fits the cadence (daily / weekly is digest territory, not real-time).

Watchlist is built for the kind of research that’s too slow to do by hand and too sporadic to justify writing a scraper. You want to know when something changes, not babysit a tab.

Who can use it (plan gating)

Watchlist is member-only — it’s the kind of feature that costs real API quota on every check, so it lives behind a subscription. The plans are:

PlanMax profiles monitoredCadences allowed
Free0 (upsell only)
Profile Pro5Daily
Premium Viewer20Daily or Weekly

Free users see the “Monitor changes” button on every viewer page, but tapping it routes to the pricing page. Profile Pro unlocks 5 slots and daily digests. Premium Viewer is the full-fat tier — 20 slots and the ability to mix daily and weekly cadences per profile.

If you cancel and downgrade, your existing rows aren’t deleted — the ones over your new quota auto-pause until you upgrade again. So you don’t lose your research stack just because you skip a month.

How to set up a Watchlist (walkthrough)

  1. Sign in and subscribe. Free users can browse but can’t add watchlist entries. Pick a paid plan at /pricing/instagram-viewer.
  2. Search any public Instagram profile. Type a handle in the search bar; the viewer page opens.
  3. Click “Monitor changes” in the profile header. A dropdown appears with cadence options.
  4. Pick Daily digest or Weekly digest. Weekly is Premium-only and clearly marked.
  5. Click Set alert. The button switches to “Monitoring (daily)” — you’re in. InstaPV takes a baseline snapshot immediately so the next check has something to diff against.
  6. Manage from /watchlist. The dashboard lists every profile you monitor, shows your quota (3 / 5 used), last-check time, and a per-card menu for changing cadence or removing.

The first email arrives one cadence cycle after you add the profile — that is, a daily monitor’s first email lands ~24 hours later, weekly’s first email lands a week later. There’s nothing to receive on the same day you add it, because there’s no diff yet.

Use cases that actually matter

The reason a feature like this exists is not “spy on your ex.” Instagram has worked hard to make that adversarial behaviour painful, and Watchlist isn’t shaped for it. The genuine wins are research jobs that are too slow to do by hand:

1. Brand partnership scouting

When a creator follows a brand, that’s an early — sometimes leading — indicator of a partnership in the works. Labels, agencies, and brand teams have long used follow patterns this way. Doing it by hand means checking the same creator’s following list every few days and remembering what changed; you’ll miss things. With a daily Watchlist, the diff appears in your inbox the morning after the follow happens. Pair this with the recent follows brand-research playbook and the workflow gets shorter.

2. Competitor monitoring

Watching what your competitors are doing on Instagram is normal commercial intelligence. Who they follow, who follows them, and how that list shifts over time tells you about hires, partnerships, niche pivots, and audience growth. A weekly digest of follower changes for the three or four accounts you care about is a reasonable, low-noise feed.

3. Creator vetting

When you’re about to work with a creator and you want to understand the audience trajectory before signing, follower-count screenshots are a poor signal — they’re a single moment in time. A 2-week Watchlist gives you the direction of the audience: are followers churning out, are they growing steadily, are the new followers from real-looking accounts? You see the names, not just the deltas.

4. Your own account hygiene

Monitor your own handle and you’ll see, with no notification anxiety, exactly who unfollowed you week-to-week. Many third-party “unfollower” apps demand your Instagram password and get you banned for OAuth abuse. InstaPV never asks for your password — it monitors the same public list anyone could see by visiting your profile. Adding your own handle to the Watchlist is the lowest-risk way to keep tabs on churn.

5. Public-figure or campaign tracking

Journalists, researchers, and trend-watchers often track which accounts a public figure or campaign follows over time — politicians joining new advocacy accounts, founders following new categories, celebrities aligning with movements. The shifts in following lists are public, and they’re often where the story breaks first.

Privacy & boundaries

Watchlist only works on public profiles. Private accounts cannot be added — Instagram’s API doesn’t expose their following / follower data and InstaPV won’t try to circumvent that. The accounts you monitor are never notified; the public lists InstaPV reads are the same ones any visitor could browse manually.

The data flow is straightforward: InstaPV’s servers fetch the public lists on the cadence you set, store snapshots, diff them, email you. Your Instagram credentials never enter the system — there’s no OAuth, no password field, nothing tied to your IG identity. If you cancel email alerts in /account/notifications, alerting stops immediately; if you remove a Watchlist entry, the snapshot history goes too.

This isn’t a “stalker tool.” It’s a feed of public signals delivered on a sane cadence. Use it the same way you’d use a Google Alert for a search term — to know when something changed in territory you already had the right to watch.

FAQ

Q: Will the person I monitor know? No. The accounts on your Watchlist are never notified or contacted. InstaPV reads the same public lists anyone can read by visiting the profile.

Q: Can I monitor a private account? No. Private accounts hide their follower/following lists from everyone except approved followers — InstaPV can’t see them either, and won’t try.

Q: How often does the check actually run? Daily monitors check every 24 hours; weekly monitors check every 168 hours. Both run automatically — there’s no manual refresh required.

Q: I just added a profile. Why no email yet? The first email arrives one full cadence cycle after you add the profile, because there has to be a diff to send. Day 1: baseline. Day 2 (daily): first email. Day 8 (weekly): first email.

Q: What if I want to pause alerts but keep the entry? Open /account/notifications and toggle “Email me when watchlist activity is detected” off. Your entries stay; you just stop getting emails until you turn it back on.

Q: Can I switch between daily and weekly? Yes. On the viewer page click the “Monitoring” button → “Switch to daily / weekly”. Premium plans can pick freely; Pro is daily-only.

Q: I removed an entry and want to re-add it — any wait? No. The previous 24-hour cooldown was removed in May 2026. You can remove and re-add freely.

Q: I’m bumping against my 5-profile limit on Profile Pro. Upgrade options? Premium Viewer raises the cap to 20 and unlocks weekly cadence. Existing entries you exceed on a downgrade auto-pause and resume on the next upgrade — you don’t lose any research history.

Get started

The setup is one click from any public profile page. Open https://www.instapv.ai/, search a handle, and click Monitor changes in the profile header. If you’re on Free, you’ll be invited to upgrade — the Profile Pro plan is the lowest tier that unlocks Watchlist.

Once you’re monitoring, the dashboard at /watchlist is your hub for everything. Email preferences are at /account/notifications.

The Watchlist exists because reconstructing change over time is the part Instagram doesn’t surface natively. InstaPV does it once, on a cadence, and ships it to your inbox.
